Search Skills

Search vs Research

Up until now you have used search engines to search or find facts. Now you will use search tools for research, or to strategically gather a variety of sources in order to create knowledge. To do this you will need more advanced search techniques.

This tutorial covers search strategies that work best in library databases and search engines like Google or Google Scholar. You can also use these techniques in Primo for books and physical items. For journal articles in Primo, see the section below.

Common Primo Mistakes

Primo, the library’s main search tool, is a unique tool which is different from search engines and library databases. These differences are most important when searching for electronic journal articles.

Google Advanced Search

Google is a great tool for doing background research, to check spelling, or to come up with a list of search terms to try in Primo or library databases.
