Purpose: Help CUW undergraduate and graduate students discover useful sources for English courses.

How to Use: Resources in this guide are organized by type. Click a tab to view the appropriate resources for your information need.

General

Academic Search Complete (EBSCOhost) Comprehensive scholarly, multi-disciplinary full-text database, with full-text periodicals, including peer-reviewed journals. Indexing and abstracts for journals monographs, reports, conference proceedings, etc.

Humanities International Complete (HIC) (EBSCOhost-provided by Badgerlink) Content: full text journals, books and other published sources from around the world. HIC includes all the data from American Humanities Index and Humanities International Index.

JSTOR 1,000+ full-text scholarly journals are articles on a wide variety of subjects.

Literature Specific

Artemis Literary Sources (Gale) Access centuries of critiques on authors and their works that span all time periods, types of literature and regions. CUW’s coverage includes Children’s Literature Review (covers some of the most influential authors of children’s literature), Contemporary Literature Criticism (authors currently active or who died after Dec. 31, 1999), Shakespearean Criticism and Poetry Criticism.

Bloom’s Literary Criticism More than 550 e-books from Bloom’s Literary Criticism series.

Book Review Index Online (Full Text) (Gale) Book Review Index Online is a comprehensive source for book reviews from 1965 to the present.

Linguistics Database (ProQuest) Covers all aspects of the study of language including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics.

Literary Index (Gale) Master index to every literary series published by Gale. It combines and cross references more than 130,000 author names including pseudonyms and variant names and more than 140,000 titles into one source.

Literary Reference Center Plus (EBSCOhost) Literary Reference Center Plus includes full-text resources focusing on plays/drama, poetry, religious literature and children‘s literature. This database also includes volumes of fantasy/science fiction, contemporary literature, world philosophy and religious literature, and literary study guides covering American Literature, English Literature and literary genres.

Literature Criticism Online (Gale) Access centuries of critiques on authors and their works that span all time periods, types of literature and regions. CUW’s coverage includes Children‘s Literature Review (covers some of the most influential authors of children’s literature), Contemporary Literature Criticism (authors currently active or who died after Dec. 31, 1999), Shakespearean Criticism, and Poetry Criticism.

Literature Resource Center (Gale) Deep collection of full-text critical and literary analysis: literature criticism, biographies, topic and work overviews, news, primary sources, literary works, images, links to audio and interviews, and reviews.

Understanding Shakespeare (JSTOR) A tool that enables anyone to pick a play, click on a line, and instantly see articles on JSTOR that reference the text. All 38 of his plays included and navigation options to explore the plays by type: comedies, tragedies, histories, and romances.

Research Tips

    • criticism formats: Books, essays, journal articles,
    • Well know works, authors, and some characters will have their own subject terms. Look for links in item records.
    • In literature databases use the advanced search to search for title and author, and limit to literary criticism under “content type”
    • In Primo, use the advanced Search and include the author and title of the work plus the word criticism
