Doctoral Program Orientation

Welcome to CUW! Your librarian Elaine Gustafson has designed a set of activities to help you build or brush up on your database searching skills.

Depending on your current experience level, some activities will be easy or challenging.

Session 1 PowerPoint covers library basics for doctoral students and what makes doctoral library research different.

Before you can search for articles or books on a topic, you must brainstorm keywords that represent the main ideas in your topic.

Watch this video: Choosing Keywords (2 min)

Complete the task 1 table on page 1 of the Orientation Homework Sheet (DOC).

Subject terms (definition): standardized terms for different topics or source types assigned by librarians.

Subject terms are assigned to each item. This video covers the difference between keywords and subject terms.

Now you are ready to create a search string and complete some sample searches.

  • Open the database link and the video in two separate windows side by side. Watch these two videos and follow along with the steps in the database. Pause the video as you complete each step.
  • You will complete this task twice, once with ProQuest & once with EBSCOhost.
